Istria

The geographical features of Istria include the Učka mountain ridge, which is the highest portion of the Ćićarija mountain range; the rivers Dragonja, Mirna, Pazinčica, and Raša; and the Lim bay and valley. Istria lies in three countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. By far the largest portion (89%) lies in Croatia. "Croatian Istria" is divided into two counties, the larger being Istria County in western Croatia. Important towns in Istria County include Pula/Pola, Poreč/Parenzo, Rovinj//Rovigno, Pazin//Pisino, Labin/Albona, Umag/Umago, Motovun//Montona, Buzet/Pinguente, and Buje/Buie.

Smaller towns in Istria County include Višnjan, Roč, and Hum. The northwestern part of Istria lies in Slovenia: it is known as Slovenian Istria, and includes the coastal municipalities of Piran/Pirano, Izola/Isola and Koper/Capodistria, and the Karstic municipality of Hrpelje-Kozina.

Northwards of Slovenian Istria, there is a tiny portion of the peninsula that lies in Italy. This smallest portion of Istria consists of the comunes of Muggia and San Dorligo della Valle, with the place of Santa Croce (Trieste) most to the north. The ancient region of Histria extended over a much wider area, including the whole Kras plateau until the southern edges of the Vipava Valley, the southwestern portions of modern Inner Carniola with Postojna and Ilirska Bistrica, and the modern Italian Province of Trieste, but not the Liburnian coast which was already part of Illyricum.

Istria - Pula

One of the main sights and at the same time the landmark of the city is the amphitheater Pula, which was built under Emperor Augustus and expanded under Emperor Vespasian. Measuring 133 meters × 105 meters, it could seat about 23,000 people, making it one of the largest amphitheaters built by the Romans. The façade, which has been largely preserved up to the original height of 32.5 meters, is also Augustan according to a more recent opinion. Another well-preserved Roman monument is the Arch of the Sergians, built between 29 and 27 BC to commemorate Octavian's victory at the Battle of Actium. Also worth seeing are the Temple of Augustus (2 BC to 14 AD) and the Archaeological Museum of Istria (AMI) with the double gate Porta Gemina as access to the main building of the museum. Right in the center, not far from the Arch of the Sergians, is the city market of Pula. The market hall, a former train station built in 1903, the marketplace with agricultural products and countless cafes and restaurants with local and international cuisine.

Istria - Rovinj

The picturesque townscape, the numerous beaches in the vicinity of the city, especially on the Golden Cape and the convenient location for exploring the surrounding area e.g. B. to the Lim Canal, make the city an attractive tourist destination. The 22 islands in front of the city, such as the Crveni Otok (Red Island; Italian San Andrea), which are easy to reach by boat and also offer bathing and diving opportunities, are also scenically attractive. The harbor promenade and numerous restaurants and shops in the city center, which is closed to vehicles, invite you to stroll. For cyclists there is a cycle path (starting point is the marina), well signposted to the Polari campsite - approx. 4 km through pine forests and past bathing bays. Motorists can cover the last 15 km from the Istrian Ypsilon at the intersection of A8/A9 via the D303. Rovinj had a direct rail connection to the Divača–Pula line in Kanfanar. The single-track line, a good 20 km long, ended north of the old town on the waterfront. It was abandoned many years ago, but is still clearly visible on satellite images - as are some level crossings in the street paving. Their course is still drawn in OpenStreetMap as well as the Bing and Google maps even in 2012, even if in the latter sometimes a few meters are not quite congruent with the actual landmarks.
